- Asthma: 2,257 visits; 1,018 patients
- Diabetes mellitus: 6,496 visits; 1,533 patients
- HBA1c (hemoglobin diabetes test) below 7% rate: 32.3% (1,608 patients met criteria)
- Hypertension: 2,232 visits; 860 patients
- Controlled hypertension rate: 57.2% (1,638 patients met criteria)
- Contraceptive management: 9,663 visits; 4,742 patients
- Chart audit 2-year vaccines rate: 90% (798 patients met criteria)
Women’s Health and Perinatal Care
Analysis of birth statistics for our service area shows ours to be an at-risk population of mothers and infants – rates of neither birth weights nor first trimester prenatal care meet the nation’s Healthy People 2010 goals.
The closure of 12 hospitals and 10 ERs since 1998 has affected health care for the women in our community greatly. In our service area alone, the closing of King/Drew’s OB/GYN, inpatient pediatric, and neonatal units has meant that every year at least 600 women must find pregnancy care at facilities outside their community. In 2010, the breakdown of perinatal services provided by EPFMC in our Women’s Health Center follows:

- Live Births: 1500 - 2499 grams: 5.31%
- Live Births: > 2500 grams: 93.67%
- Total LBW (low birth weights): 6.33% (all patients regardless of risk [diabetes, multiple births, late prenatal care, lifestyle, etc.])
Distinguishing characteristics of the mothers-to-be we serve illustrate a few of the problems our Pregnancy Care and Education services were designed to address.
- Only 78.7 percent of women in our service area successfully access prenatal care in their first trimester (California Department of Public Health, 2009). This compares with LA County’s rate of 85.5 percent (Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, 2009).
- Our service area experiences a higher percentage of low birth weight babies and a higher infant mortality rate than the rest of LA County (Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, 2009).
- A higher percentage of teen pregnancies occur in our service area than in Los Angeles County overall (CDPH, 2008).
- Of the nearly 14,232 babies born in EPFMC’s service area in 2009, 13.8 percent were to mothers under 20 (CDPH, 2008) [compared with L.A. County’s 9.6 percent (Peristats, 2007)].
